Cutting down timber trafficking: Postcode Lottery backs Wildlife Justice to help save forests from illegal logging

Illegal logging and timber trafficking are driving the loss of the earth’s forests and pose an existential threat to life on our planet.

“Today, thanks to a €1.26 million grant from the Postcode Lottery, made possible by its players across the Netherlands, the Wildlife Justice Commission is pleased to bring our proven, intelligence-driven and law-enforcement focused approach to tackling timber trafficking,” said Olivia Swaak-Goldman, Executive Director of the Wildlife Justice Commission.

The Postcode Lottery’s generous, three-year grant will support Wildlife Justice’s work with governments and law enforcement partners to go after the financiers, buyers, and brokers who decimate our forests for profit. This work will build on Wildlife Justice’s existing, successful partnerships with law enforcement agencies to fight other forms of trafficking, including endangered wildlife and vulnerable marine species.

“The vision and generosity of the Postcode Lottery and its players will echo for generations to come as the pressure from illegal logging is diminished, allowing our forests time and space to restore themselves”, added Ms. Swaak-Goldman.

Over the past three decades, millions of dollars have been invested in ending illegal logging but produced only modest results. With a decade of success taking out kingpins and disrupting criminal trafficking networks, Wildlife Justice brings the promise of an effective, durable solution to timber trafficking.
