International broadcast journalist, Ghida Fakhry, announced as Director of Proceedings for the Viet Nam Public Hearing on 14 & 15 November 2016.

Ghida Fakhry is an international broadcast journalist and former Senior News and Programs Presenter for the global television network, Aljazeera English. She has more than 20 years’ experience as Lead Anchor, Political Correspondent, UN/Diplomatic Correspondent, Columnist and Bureau Chief for multiple international news organisations.

Her areas of expertise include human rights, current affairs, the United Nations, US foreign policy and the Middle East. She joined AJE at its launch in 2006 and took on the role of Lead Anchor at the Washington DC broadcast center before moving in 2010 to the channel’s headquarters in Doha, where she was one of the primary presenters and Host of the award-winning documentary program, Witness.

On her role as Director of Proceedings, Ghida Fahkry said:

It highlights the Wildlife Justice Commission’s unwavering commitment to expose and disrupt the networks behind the illegal international trade in wildlife, particularly elephant ivory and rhino horn.

By putting a spotlight on this important and urgent issue, the Wildlife Justice Commission is sending a clear message to those who are actively involved in wildlife crime, and those who turn a blind eye to it. I look forward to facilitating a critical, open and fruitful discussion of the evidence gathered by the Wildlife Justice Commission’s extensive investigation in an even-handed and action-oriented way.’

Ghida reported on location from Iraq and Afghanistan in the aftermath of the US-led invasion in 2003 and conducted in-depth interviews with top US officials Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell. She reported regularly from the United Nations headquarters in New York on special assignments and conducted extensive interviews with Heads of State and Government including Hamid Karzai, Pervez Musharraf, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Muammar Qaddafi, as well as former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and incoming Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Ghida is an experienced Moderator and Chair at international conferences and high-level panels, facilitating informative and dynamic debates on complex global issues such as human rights, peace and security and sustainable development. She is fluent in English, Arabic and French and is proficient in Spanish. She holds a Masters degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. She is currently based in NYC.
