5 June 2016, World Environment Day 2016: Our wildlife crime graphics series illustrating ‘supply & demand’ – no.4 Rhino.
High demand for rhino horn comes from Asian consumers, particularly in Viet Nam & China where the horn is used in traditional medicine and decorative objects. In 2015 more than 1,200 rhinos were poached and illegally trafficked from South Africa alone. This is a staggering 3 rhinos a day… The northern white rhino is the most endangered species on the planet, extinct in the wild and with only 3 left in captivity. We see huge amounts of ‘raw’ rhino horn and rhino horn ‘products’ in our investigations every day.
