HOW YOU CAN
FIGHT THE ILLEGAL PET TRADE
Behind every “cute” exotic pet may be a story of trafficking, cruelty, and loss. Wild animals are being taken from their natural habitats and sold for profit, often through sophisticated criminal networks.
The Cost of Cute is the Wildlife Justice Commission’s guide to understanding the illegal pet trade and the simple actions you can take to help stop it.
Since 2015, Wildlife Justice Commission investigations have contributed to the arrest of nearly 400 traffickers and the rescue of more than 13.000 live animals.
WILDLIFE
IS NOT A PET
The illegal pet trade is a global criminal industry that is putting wild animals and already threatened species under increasing pressure. Demand for rare and exotic pets creates a market for traffickers, who capture animals from the wild and move them through criminal networks to buyers around the world. Online platforms and social media can make it easier for traffickers to reach potential buyers and promote illegally sourced animals.
We all have a role to play in reducing demand and making it harder for traffickers to profit from the illegal pet trade. Learn how to recognise and avoid illegally sourced wildlife by downloading our guide, and support the Wildlife Justice Commission’s investigations into the criminal networks driving wildlife trafficking.
